What is the best repellent?

DEET is proven to be the best repellent against mosquitoes available. This comes in different strengths and the higher the percentage, the more effective it is and the longer it lasts. The most popular strength is 50% DEET but we recommend you get one with a bite inhibitor (PLUS +).

Is a natural repellent as good as DEET?

Lifesystems conduct many tests with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In these tests, it was found that our natural repellent can be as effective as DEET, depending on which type of mosquito you use. For some mosquito types, DEET is more effective. We recommend natural repellents for lower risk areas.

How much repellent would I need for a week?

This will obviously depend on how much protection you will need and the environmental conditions, but as a rule of thumb, 50ml will last about 6 or 7 days.

Can DEET harm me?

DEET can damage plastics, lacquers etc. The Health and Safety Executive has deemed it safe for use on the skin but it can be harmful in contact with eyes or mouth.

How long does the repellent last?

The repellent will last 2 years from when the bottle is first opened.

What are the benefits of Saltidin formulation insect repellent?

Our saltidin formula repellent does not contain DEET and is a family-friendly solution for biting and stinging insects. Our formula is 20% Saltidin based, derived from a soothing chemical compound, highly effective against a wide variety of biting and stinging insects lasting for up to 8 hours. It is also suitable for children over age 2, for use by pregnant women, and individuals with sensitive skin.

Can I use DEET and sunscreen together?

They can be applied to the same area of skin. Using DEET insect repellent with sunscreen decreases the effectiveness of the sunblock by about 30-40%. However, always apply the sun cream first and allow this to absorb thoroughly into the skin before applying the repellent. The effectiveness our repellents should not be affected by the sunscreen, and there is no need to apply more than the recommended amount of insect repellent. Just be prepared to re-apply sunscreen more often than if using sunscreen alone.

What is a Lumen?

Luminous flux (lumen) is the most important term for characterising the performance of a torch. It refers to the amount of light or light energy that is actually radiated from a light source. It can be easily used to compare torches, with higher values being representative of a brighter light.

What are the advantages of using an LED torch as opposed to a traditional one?

LED technology offers excellent levels of brightness and an LED bulb will never need replacing, unlike an incandescent bulb. LEDs are extremely energy efficient, meaning the battery life of LED light sources can be up to 4x that of a conventional torch.

Do Lifesystems torches have different settings?

Our range of torches and head torches feature multiple lighting modes. All models feature either a quick-flashing or SOS-flashing mode in addition to high and low output level modes, making them extremely versatile.

Sun Protection

Are Lifesystems Sun creams fully tested?

Yes, Lifesystems test the sun creams in Australia and Israel for UVA and UVB protection. We also test on real people in real situations to make sure the product feels right as well. However, to be triply sure, we recommend that you do a patch test before travelling.

What is the difference between the Active and Mountain Sun creams?

Our Active Sun Protection is ideal for travel and low-altitude outdoor use. Each Lifesystems Active sun cream is waterproof, so can be worn in the sea without wearing out quickly. Aside from concerns about being burnt, being stung by jellyfish is one of the most painful experiences when spending time in the sea. Each Active sun cream has an anti-jellyfish formula built in.

Mountain Sun Protection is ideal for use at high altitude. Sunburn can occur very quickly at high altitude where UVA protection is very important. Our Mountain sun screens contain 5-star UV filters that protect the skin from harmful UVA rays. They are also sweatproof so will last longer during high levels of activity.

How does the Anti-Jellyfish formula work?

Our Anti-Jellyfish Sun Cream contains a natural extract which binds to the jellyfish sting sensor on contact and blocks it; as a result, the signal that would usually trigger a sting response does not arise. Other active ingredients within the cream combine to mimic substances found within the Jellyfish's own body, and so on contact, the Jellyfish thinks it is touching itself and does not fire a sting.
