Athletes > Jerry Gore
Jerry Gore is an internationally acclaimed climber and one of Britain's most prolific expedition leaders. In his 35 year climbing career, he has excelled on rock, ice and high-altitude peaks - often with notable and extreme first ascents. During this period Jerry has shared his rope with a 'Who's Who' of the climbing world including: Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, Stephen Venables, Al Hinkes, Mick Fowler, Kenton Cool, Andy Cave, Ian Parnell, Twid Turner, Gaz Parry and Andy Kirkpatrick.
Outside of climbing, Jerry has also enjoyed a varied professional career having served as a Royal Marines Captain, where he was awarded the Commandant General's personal commendation for the most outstanding Royal Marine. He spent nearly a decade as a marketing professional with Cotswold Outdoor and since being diagnosed as an insulin-dependant Diabetic in 2001- he now runs his own chalet accommodation and guiding business AlpBase.com in the Southern French Alps.
Jerry continues to ‘push his limits’ in climbing although dealing with the chronic effects of Diabetes, in the same way as he showed dogged determination on his harrowing descent from the Bugaboo’s Howser Tower; on this remote and isolated mountain summit he and his partner received a direct lightening strike, leaving him semi-paralysed, hypothermic and suffering from third degree burns. In recent years he has under gone a number of ambitious adventures to raise money for Diabetic third world charities including in 2012 ‘Jerry’s Insulin Challenge’ – where he became the first Briton to complete the Northern Alps 3 hardest walls – Mont Blanc’s Pilier D’Angle, the Eiger’s North Face and the South Face of the Marmolada.
In 2013, Jerry along with Andy Kirkpatrick, Twid Turner and Calum Muskett, will take on their biggest challenge yet on the still unclimbed SW Face of The South Tower of Paine in Patagonia. In extreme conditions - some of the harshest on the planet with sub-zero temperatures and 150mph winds – Jerry will undertake another first ascent whilst monitoring and administering insulin injections up to seven times a day. Lifesystems are proud to be sponsoring Jerry and this expedition with bespoke developed diabetic medical kits and equipment.
